The twenty-sixth of January refers back to the First Landing Day or basis Day, in 1788 whilst Captain Arthur Phillip, the first governor of New South Wales, arrived at Sydney Cove.

Australia Day is for all Australians, regardless of in which our non-public stories started out. On Australia Day, we rejoice the matters we love maximum approximately being Australian – our way of life, an experience of the truthful move, our shared values and cultural historical past, our connection to the land, but most significantly, our human beings.

On the 26th of January each year we celebrate our National Day, Australia Day in Melbourne and Victoria as the Victorian Government brings you a festive atmosphere with an array of fun activities and free events.

Australia Day 2019

The 26th of January refers to the First Landing Day or Foundation Day, in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip, the first governor of New South Wales, arrived at Sydney Cove.

Australia Day is for all Australians, no matter where our personal stories began. On Australia Day, we celebrate the things we love most about being Australian - our lifestyle, a sense of fair go, our shared values and cultural heritage, our connection to the land, but most importantly, our people.

It is our nation's largest annual public celebration, and across Victoria, there are hundreds of community events showcasing our diverse community and recognizing those who make a difference in the lives of others.

From the smallest barbecue with friends right up to the thousand-strong People's March down Swanston Street, the Australia Day Committee encourages all Australians to take pride in their country and reflect on who we are as a nation.

There will be something for everyone to enjoy throughout the day - with family, with friends or with all the other Australia Day event-goers.
