As we gather together today, we remember the supreme sacrifice of our beautiful King, the Lord Jesus Christ. Led like a lamb to the slaughter, clothed in humility and grace, he willingly offered himself to death so that we might live forever. We are truly thankful for the extent of his love, stretched out on a cruel wooden cross. We dwell on the pain he bore for us and are truly grateful for the forgiveness that he offers. As we worship and praise now, help us to live in the wonder of this goodness and marvel at his endless grace.
According to tradition, the prayer is prayed thirty-three times between noontide and 3:00 on Good Friday, basic cognitive process Christ’s most lovely sacrifice on the cross, and therefore the hours that he decorated there.
It is aforementioned thirty-three times in honor of the tradition that holds Jesus Christ spent thirty-three years on earth before he died.
Some families pray the prayer thirty-three times beginning at noontide, the hour of the crucifixion, then keep in silence till three, the hour of Our Lord’s death.
The prayer is brief and a worthy tradition to feature in your devotions for the foremost somber day of the year.
“Oh my Jesus, I pray Thee by the precious blood of Thy divine heart, by the intercession of Thy sad mother, by Thy painful love and brutal death, to assist me in this pressing necessity. Amen.”
Good Friday Prayers
Almighty God, we beseech thee graciously to behold this thy family,
for which our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed,
and given up into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the cross;
who now liveth and reigneth with thee
and the Holy Ghost ever,
world without end
Today, God, I raise that you just would teach American state to mourn. Don’t let American state rush to Easter Sunday too quickly. Provide American state grace to linger here, within the place wherever sorrow meets redemption. Build your death as real to American state as your resurrection. Keep American state continuously close to the cross.
As I wait at the foot of the cross, God, make known to American state once more the dearness of my sin. Don’t let American state sleep in AN unreal world wherever Easter’s happy ending makes my stinginess orthogonal. Strike a chord with me that your all-consuming grace came at the highest worth. Forgive American state for the days I’ve lived as if sin is not any massive deal as if Good Friday ne’er very happened.
Fill American state with the enjoyment and sorrow and reverence and feeling that agree an honest Friday funeral: joy for your ending, sorrow for your death, reverence for your sanctity, and feeling for your grace. Don’t let American state accept only one of these emotions at the expense of the others. Provide American state a heart large enough to carry all in tension. Build American state daring enough to go looking once a truth that’s very true, not simply a truth that matches simply within the palm of my hand.
Today we pause to remember your sacrificial love
That shone light into the darkness
That bore life from such emptiness
That revealed hope out of the devastation
That spoke truth through incrimination
That released freedom in spite of imprisonment
And brought us forgiveness instead of punishment.
Thank you that we can now walk in the light of your life,
Hope, truth, freedom, and forgiveness,
This day and every day.
Give American state eyes, God, to examine the triumph of the cross. Even once all appears lost, at the same time as I mourn Your death, strike a chord with me that you just conquered the grave by concealed inside it and unraveling it from the within out. Within the thick of defeat and disappointment, sing songs of ending over American state. Flip my world on its head thus I will acknowledge the inverted Kingdom of God at work.
Jesus, you tell American state to require up my cross and follow you. Nowadays quite ever, I bear in mind what a weighty invite that’s. You won by dying—and it’s solely by dying that I will follow in your footsteps. It’s solely by dying that I’ll ever actually change state.
Teach me, God, to mourn and celebrate your death. Then take American state by the hand, lead American state into my very own death, and teach American state to mourn and celebrate that death too. Amen.
